MetaTeader 4 is currently considered the industry standard regarding trading platforms as it is generally accepted by all the brokers in the market. Unfortunately, the platform can't be downloaded anymore from the official website but it may be downloaded from the site of any broker that accepts it.
The first step in using MetaTrader 4 is opening a demo accout with one of the brokers you wish to cooperate with. In this case, we will use as example
Go to the demo account creation page, fill in the spaces with your personal details, and click the submit button.
After that, select the MT4 platform and wait for it to be downloaded.
In some cases, the platform may not be downloaded directly from the site, but the download option will be displayed in the email containing your registration data, as is the case with SwissQuote.
The first welcome screen inside the platform gives you the opportunity to log in. In this case, select the server that was communicated to you in the registration email and click on Next. If you close this window, it can be accessed from the File-Login to trade account menu.
Once you have completed the authentication data, the "No connection" message at the bottom of the screen will disappear and will be replaced by the speed of your connection.
Once you've successfully logged in, click on all the x buttons on the open windows in the platform interface until you get to a screen that looks like this:
In this image you can see the most important windows in the MT4 platform as well as the keyboard combination that you can access quickly. CTRL + M will open the Market Watch window where we can see the trading tools we have access to and the Bid and Ask price of them. CTRL + N gives us access to the Navigator window where we can switch between trading accounts, we can apply graphs on graphs, or we can activate Expert Advisors. CTRL + T opens the Terminal window where you can monitor open positions as well as transaction history.
At the initial initialization of the MT4 platform, you may not have access to all the trading tools available to you by the broker. This can be remedied by right clicking in the Market Watch window and then selecting show all.
Next, by clicking on the shortcuts above, you will close the corresponding windows.
To open a trading instrument, do the following:
After you select the trading instrumentl you want to view, the screen will look like this:
In order to be able to follow the phenomena on the market, it is advisable to make up this workspace.
First, right click on the background and select the Properties menu. Here, select the "black on white" theme in the Colors submenu, and from the Common menu, uncheck "show grid" and select Candlesticks. Japanese candles are the preferred method chosen to represent the price variation because it offers an intuitive perspective on it.
Now that we have arranged the workspace, it's time to explore the platform's main features. Various menus can be seen at the top of the screen.
In the graphical menu you have access to many elements that can be placed on the graph such as trend lines, horizontal and vertical lines, Fibonacci Retracement, rectangles, triangles etc. The next panel allows us to select the desired timeframe. In this case M15 means that a candle has a "lifetime" of 15 minutes, in the case of H1 the candles have one hour lifetime, D1 a day, W1 a week, etc. More details on this topic can be found by enrolling the LS School. To zoom in / zoom out click on the magnifying glass buttons. The following two scroll buttons let us navigate to the end of the graph or select the option to navigate to the end of the graph at each tick of the price.
Each indicator and graphical element has different properties that can be modified by right clicking on it and selecting the Properties menu. For trend lines, it's helpful to disable the Ray option.
To add the indicators to the graph, click on the Insert - Indicators menu and then select the desired indicator.
Once you've brought the workspace to the desired shape, it can be saved and applied to other pairs by clicking on the "Save template" button.
To open a position, click the New order button. In the new open window you can choose the volume with which to enter the transaction, you can manually select the SL and TP value and then you can select the type of position you want to open in the market. Another way to set SL and TP is to initiate the transaction without imposing a fixed value in the menu. Then they can be set directly from the graph by dragging the green line and then dropping it at the desired position.
